glaciation Flashcards
what are the 2 types of erosion?
abrasion and plucking
what is abrasion?
as the glacier moves downhill, rocks that have been frozen into the base and sides of the glacier scrape the rock beneath
what are striations?
the rocks scrape the bedrock like sandpaper and leave scratches behind
what is plucking?
rocks become frozen into the bottom and the sides of the glacier
as the glacier moves downhill, it plucks the rocks frozen into the glacier from the ground
what is a corrie?
an armchair shaped hollow found on the side of a mountain
what is an arete?
a narrow ridge of land created when 2 corries erode eachother back to back
what is a pyramidal peak?
if three or more corries erode back towards eachother- at the top of a mountain, a pyramidal peak is left behind
what are interlocking spurs?
Hill that a river meanders around in a V-shaped valley. When viewed from downstream, these spurs appear to be locked together.
what are truncated spurs?
A rounded area of land at the edge of a U-shaped valley.
how are truncated spurs formed?
interlocking spurs are eroded at the ends by the glacier
what is a glacial trough?
A deep U-shaped valley formed by a glacier.
when is a glacial trough formed?
after the glacier has melted
what is a ribbon lake?
A long narrow lake found in a glacial trough.
what is a hanging valley?
A smaller valley which is located high above the main U-shaped valley.
when are hanging valleys formed?
when old tributaries are left suspended
