GI Immunology Flashcards
Define innate immune system
A universal and evolutionary conserved system of host defence
Define the adaptive immune system
Induced upon infection by specialised pathogens
What is the relationship between the colonic mucosa and immunity ?
The colonic mucosa gives us a physiological immunity
Define self-tolerance
We learn to mot attack our own cells
Define exogenous tolerance
We develop an ability to determine which environmental antigens are trying to causes us harm and which are not
Define effective immune response
Our immune system know when to attack and eliminate infectious or toxic agents
What are cytokines and what is their function ?
Mediators of the immune system They are anti-inflammatory
What are T-cells and what is their function ?
Can be either pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory
What is a peyers patch ?
A large group of immune cells which is often found within the gut, it contains antigen presenting cells.
IBD is a result of ?
Leaky epithelial barrier in which bad bacteria can cross this barrier and cause inflammation
Name 3 signals that determine T-Cell response
MHC/peptide-TCR
CD80-CD28
Cytokines
Name 3 T regulatory cells
Th3, Tr1 and Treg
Name 3 T helper cells ?
Th1, Th2 and Th17
