What is the difference between grosslage and Grosse Lage?
Grosslage - a collective vineyard site, a grouping of several vineyards supposed to make wine of a similar style. Can be made from sites from multiple villages. The opposite to einzellage (single vineyard). Often a misleading name for an inexpensive wine ie. Piesporter Michelsberg
Grosse Lage - a grand cru site as designated by the VDP, from which either Grosses Gewächs dry wines can be made, or traditional Prädikat-stye wines can be made.

Reichsgraff von Kesselstadt leases 0.6ha from J. Wegelerr
On what latitude does the Mosel sit?
50°
Describe the climate and growing conditions of the Mosel
Cold, continental (average temp 10°C)
Temperature moderated by:
- river - prevents spring frost, allows autumn fog > botrytis
- orientation (best sites south or south-west facing)
- aspect (high gradient)
- altitude (~110m asl)
- exposure to wind (from Hunsrück and Eifel ranges, forests at top of the slope protect)
Best sites can extend growing time from 100 days to 140/150 due to aspect
What are the benefits of Mosel slate soil?
- free draining - regular rainfall through the season
- collects heat, especially dark blue coloured slate
- prevents erosion of slope
- limits the effect of phylloxera - present, but less harmful; most vines on rootstock anyway
- nitrogen deficiency and low pH lead to sulphur-derived ‘minerality’
Where are the steepest slopes of the Mosel located?
Hint - this bereich is also known as the Terrassenmosel
Burg Cochem bereich
Up to 70%
What is Flurbereinigung?
Land reform or land consolidation that was at its peak in teh Mosel after WW2 and was set into law in 1971.
The Flurbereinigung campaign leveled and widened hillsides to permit machines, reorganised vineyards, old vines pulled up, flat land stripped of fruit trees and planted to grapes.
