Quality from Lowest to Highest Level:

  1. Deutscher Wein - table wine
    • wines without geographical indication
    • known as Tafelwein until 2009
  2. Landwein - regional wine (IGP in Italian)
  3. Qualitätswein
    • chapitalization permitted
    • must be produced from approved varieties sourced from a single anbaugebiet
  4. Prädikatswein
    • no chapitalization permitted
    • wines in this category are further labeled by prädikats
    • this prädikat level is determined by the level of sugars in the grape at harvest, measured by degrees according to the Öchsle scale
    • may also carry an Amtliche Prüfungsnummer (AP Number) - a series of five sets of numbers indicating that the wine has been approved by a tasting panel
