Geography:Structure of the earth Flashcards
What does molten mean?
Melted/liquid
What does semi-molten rock mean?
Half solid and half liquid rock
what is core made out of?
nickel and iron
what is the inner core?
Inner core is a solid ball due to pressure.
Explain how convection currents work.
Magma inside the mantel heated up and rise. Then when it cools down it sinks back down to the mantel. And it becomes a cycle.
What is each layer of the earth made of?
The core has two layers:inner core and outer core. The core is made out of nickel and iron. The inner core is solid due to the pressure and the outer core is liquid. The mantel is made out of molten rocks/magma.The crust is called plates.
How many major plates and minor plates are there?
Seven major plates and several minor plates.
What are the 3 types of plate boundaries?
Conservative,Constructive and destructive.
Describe constructive plate boundaries.
It drag tectonic plates apart.
Sea floor spreading(sea floor getting bigger).
Volcanoes,volcanic islands and mid-ocean ridges.
Example:The Mid-Atlantic Ridge
Describe destructive plate boundaries.
It happens when two plates move towards each other,or collide.
The ocean plate is heavier and sinks into the mantel.
Fold mountains, volcanoes and volcanic islands arc.
Describe conservation plate boundaries.
Plates are not destroyed or created.
Sometimes the plates move in opposite directions ,or in the same direction but at different speeds.
