characterized by seasonal rainfall and other climate patterns
Major Mountain Ranges of the US
Appalachian Mountains, Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevada Mountains,
Humid Continental
North Eastern United States. Wildly different temperatures between seasons. Summers hot and humid, winters are cold and rainy or snowy.
Humid Subtropical
South Eastern United States. Summers are uncomfortably hot and humid. Winters are mild with severe storms possible.
Arid
Southwest United States. Dry with very little rain causing species to adapt. Very hot during the day and very cold at night.
Semiarid
Dry hot summers with cool winters. Areas include Nebraska, Oklahoma, Colorado, Montana.
Highland
States that contain the Rocky Mountains. The climate varies depending on altitude.
Marine West Coast
The Pacific Northwest. Mild temperatures and is cloudy and rainy year-round.
Coastal Plains
Low, flat plains that run along the Gulf of Mexico and partially up the eastern seaboard.
Canadian Shield
an expanse of hundreds of lakes surrounding Hudson Bay in Canada.
The Great Plains
stretches across the interior of North America. Historically, this region was covered in tall prairie grasses. Today, this area is important farmland known as America’s Breadbasket.
The Rocky Mountains
The Rocky Mountains cut across the entire continent, from Alaska all the way south to Mexico.
The Continental Divide
This division separates the rivers that flow west into the Pacific Ocean from the rivers that flow eastglossary term (opens in a new window) into the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.
