Genus Avipoxvirus Flashcards
what virus is within the genus
fowlpox
first virus to be… ?
-hosts
-distribution
grown in embryonated eggs
hosts: poultry and turkey
worldwide
transmission
virus resistant to desiccation, survive in exfoliated scabs for long periods of time, transmitted within a flock through minor wounds and abrasions in mouth, comb, wattles, skin, mechanically by lice, mosquitos and ticks, maybe by aerosol route
3 forms of the disease
- cutaneous (dry form)
- diphtheritic form (wet form)
- ocular form
cutaneous form (dry form) CS
-most common
-low mortality
-results from biting arthropods, or mechanical transmission to injured skin
-small papules on comb, wattles, around beak
-lesions develop on legs, feet
-nodules become yellowish and progress to a thick scab
-sharp fall in egg prod.
-uncomplicated cases: affected birds recover in 4 weeks
-VERY CONTAGIOUS
diphtheritic form (wet form) CS
-probably caused by droplet infection
-involves infection of mucous membranes of mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea
-lesions result in necrotic pseudomembranes which cause death by asphyxiation
POOR PROGNOSIS
ocular form CS
conjunctivitis, cheesy exudate accumulates under eye lids and can cause temporary blindness
avipoxvirus characteristic inclusion bodies (2)
- bollinger bodies: eosinophilic granular intracytoplasmic
- borrel bodies: occur inside bollinger bodies, spherical bodies obtained by tryptic digestion of bollinger bodies
fowlpox virus vax and control
VAX: modified live fowlpox or pigeon pox virus vaccines of chicken embryo or avian cell culture origin
-recombinant fowlpox vectored vax have been developed
-control: mosquitos and other biting insects
