Genetics Flashcards
what is an allele
a variant of a gene
what is a locus
the fixed position where an allele is found on each chromosome
what is genotype
the alleles for one characteristic at one time
what is sex-linkage
alleles that code for a characteristic are on the sex chromosomes
what is co-dominance
condition where both alleles for one gene in a heterozygous organisms contribute to the phenotype
what is dominant allele
an allele that is always expressed in the phenotype of an organism
what is a recessive allele
affect of allele is apparant in the pheotype of a diploid organism only in the prescence of another identical allele
what is epistasis
when an allele of one gene affects the expression of alleles of other genes
what is phenotype
the characterisitics of an organism, often visible resulting from both its genotype and the affects of its enviroment
what is a heterozygous organism
an organism that carries two different alleles for a gene
what is a homozygous organism
an organism that carries two of the same alleles for a gene
what is recessive epistasis
when two recessive alleles present affects hypostatic gene
what is the hypostatic gene
the gene affected due to epistasis
what is the epistic gene
the gene that affects the hypostatic gene
what is autosomal linkage
when 2 or more genes are located on the same chromosome they tend to be inherited together
