Q

Analytical

A

Analytical Skills – My final year project of designing the exhaust system for the Leeds Formula Student race team required full use of my analytical skills.

My task was to design an exhaust system which was quieter than the competition regulations without compromising the cars performance significantly, something which had not been achieved in the past two years.

I started this project with an in depth literature review starting from the fundamentals, critically reviewing a large number of sources.

From this research I identified a method of reducing the noise output which had not been trialled in previous years.

I came up with an innovative design to include an expansion chamber into the exhaust system.

I produced models varying the dimensions and materials of the expansion chamber using computer modelling with GT Power to produce large sets of noise output and also engine power.

This data required large amounts of analysis to identify the trends and present it appropriately.

The outcome of this was I successfully predicted a lower output for my design than the competition limits whilst ensuring good engine performance.

I was finally able to present this in a final written report and also a verbal presentation.

Q

Problem solving skills

A

Developed throughout my engineering degree and refined whilst working in technical support, solving customer problems on a daily basis.

My final year project involved designing the Exhaust system for the Leeds Formula Student Race Car.

The problem was that in the past two years the car had exceeded the regulation noise limits, disqualifying it from the competition.

Therefore my task was essential to ensure the car could compete in the competition.

I implanted an innovative design which included a large expansion chamber using modelling and analysis through GT Power software.

I was then able to predict the noise output of the car, comparing it to previous cars and ensuring that the design did not hinder the overall car performance.

Q

Give an example of you having Determination?

A

If something is particularly challenging then I am even more motivated and determined to achieve it, even if I don’t manage this the first time.

An example of this is when was working in the purchasing department at Midland Computer services.

Sometimes a particular part would not be available from the usual supplier, if it was urgent I would often have to keep trying different suppliers to see if they had the part and in some cases import it from around the world.

Q

Give an example of you having Self-motivation?

A

Whenever I complete a task the next thing that springs to my mind is what can be the next task, as I always enjoy to be challenged.

For example when working at Midland Computer Services in customer support after solving each case I would immediately go back through the case log and attempt to solve other active issues.

If there were no others that could be solved I would got through the list of parts awaiting return from customers and chase them up.

This meant faulty items were returned faster and they could then either be repaired or called in for replacement.

Q

Give an example of you being Inquisitive?

A

When working on customer support at Midland Computer Services I was often either flat out with calls or some days I would only receive a few calls meaning I had some free time.

As I am naturally inquisitive as to how things work and am always eager to learn, I would spend this time researching how the servers the company produced worked in detail.

This would range from researching on the internet to shadowing members of the production team when they were building.

The results of this was I soon had a much better understanding of the various machines and therefore was much more adept at answering questions customers had about them.

Q

Give an example of you being ambitious?

A

I have always been ambitious to learn and take on more responsibility.

Whilst I was working at Midland computer services in the accounts and purchasing department I would often take on additional responsibilities when my colleagues were on holiday.

An example of this would be important tasks such as order processing.

It was key that the orders were processed as soon as payment was confirmed so orders could be put into production.

When my colleague responsible for this was on holiday I volunteered to take up the extra responsibility and process the orders, logging them in both excel and QuickBooks as they came in.

This ensure orders were shipped out as soon as they possibly could.

Q

Give an example of you being a Quick learner?

A

During my first role at Midland Computer Services working in customer support I was thrown in at the deep end. I was the first point of call for customers who had issues with their servers, meaning I often had to answer questions on things I originally knew little about. I used my initiative to look through the log of previous errors and identify which type of errors came up most frequently. I then spent any free time I had researching these errors so I could better deal with them when customers. This was a steep learning curve but very soon I was able to deal with the most common problems and only had to escalate the more unusual issues.

Q

Give an example of when someone has told you something you have done is wrong. How did you react to this?

A

When I was working at Midland Computer Services in the production management department I was in charge of production plans. I sent the scheduled production plan to my MD and gave me feedback that this needed to be amended to achieve monthly production target of 500K.

My reaction to this was to go through all the orders identifying what was holding each of them up.

I identified several orders which realistically had no chance of shipping soon and re-allocated there parts to complete various other orders which were close to being completed.

I was promptly able to re-submit my amended production plan to the MD and meet the monthly target.

17
Q

What are your three greatest accomplishments?

A

Graduating University of Leeds with a 1st class honours degree.

18
Q

What makes a good team?

A

Diverse – To work effectively the team needs to have a range of skills, there is little point having everyone with identical skill sets.

Organised – The team needs to be well organised and working towards the same goals and values. Targets and deadlines ensure that the team is efficient.

Strong leadership - to make sure everyone is motivated and drives everyone to work towards the same goal.

19
Q

What makes a good team leader?

A

Clear Communicator - Effective team leaders communicate clearly. Quality verbal and written communication skills allow leaders to present expectations to team members in a way workers can understand. Effective communication skills also allow team leaders to listen to the input of others.

Organised - Effective team leaders possess exceptional organizational skills. Organizational skills help team leaders plan objectives and strategies, which allow team members to perform optimally. Organized team leaders put systems in place that maintain order and guide team members toward meeting company goals and objectives.

Well Respected - A quality team leader is respectful of his team members. A respectful leader empowers employees by encouraging them to offer ideas about decisions that affect them. This lets team members know that the leader respects their input and opinions.

Able to delegate - Effective team leaders know how to share leadership through delegation. Delegating certain tasks to trustworthy team members allows the leader to focus on improving workplace functions and production.

20
Q

What was the last film you saw or the last book you read?

A

The last book I read was humans…

The last film I was was Se7en.

21
Q

How would you describe yourself?

A

Highly Motivated – I am motivated to complete task and solve problems but also I have self-motivation to think further than this and I always look for my next objective to complete in all aspects of life.

Determined -

Innovative – I am good at thinking out side of the box in regards to solving problems, I have done this many times throughout my degree. For example when I designed the expansion chamber for the exhaust system on the formula student race car I solved the problem of fixing the aluminium expansion chamber to the stainless steel header. I used an innovate spring fitting rather than welding these to materials which was not feasible.

22
Q

What motivates you?

A

Motivated when I am challenged, I like to work towards targets and when I meet my targets I immediately look to the next challenge. Solving problems, especially when the outcome is visible, is something that motivates me greatly. For examples at Midland Computer Services…

23
Q

Tell me about a typical day in your current/previous job?

A

In my most recent role in the accounts and purchasing department at Midland Computer Services I would begin my day addressing any emails I had received. I would then update a report for daily figures such as sales and shipping for the MD with the values from the previous day. I would then…

24
Q

Describe the last time you got really stressed at work?

A

When working in the purchasing department at Midland Computer Services my colleague in the purchasing department was on holiday and one of our key suppliers held a few of our orders which were quite urgently needed for production.

I dealt with this by remaining calm and seeing if there was anyway the supplier could speed up the delivery of the orders. In the end a compromise was reached where they send a like for like alternative out for delivery the next day.

25
Q

What has been your greatest failure?

A

Recently my greatest failure that springs to mind is when I was initially working at Midland Computer services in customer support.

A routine issue was a failed hard drive which we guaranteed we would ship out a replacement with next day delivery.

I packaged up the new drive and booked the delivery in to the customers address stored in the courier account.

Unfortunately this was an outdated address and the drive was sent to their old address.

The next day I received an angry phone call asking where their drive was as I had told them they would have it the next day.

To rectify this I immediately admitted responsibility to the error and mentioned to the customer that I should have confirmed their address before shipping it.

I then contacted the courier company to book it to be collected that day from the incorrect address and be re-delivered on a pre-10:30 am delivery to the customer.

As a result of this I now always double check fine details and since then this has not happened again.

26
Q

What’s your biggest pet peeve at work?

A

I am usually quite adept at maintaining my focus when I’m at work but I guess one thing I find annoying is when consistently have a negative or pessimistic attitude towards tasks. However I am usually very good at blocking this out and getting on with my work in a very positive manner.

27
Q

How do you ensure you/your team don’t get overwhelmed?

A

Whether working individually or in a team I strongly believe that detailed plans and objectives prevent getting overwhelmed with work and deadlines.

Regular targets mean that it is easy to identify if you are behind early on where work can easily be caught up on without causing too much stress.

Prioritising tasks is another key method for avoiding this as the most import tasks with the closest deadline are addressed first.

This helps to avoid last minute work where possible and allows room for other urgent work if it does happen to appear.

28
Q

What would your colleagues and friends consider as your best qualities?

A

My friends or colleagues would describe me as:

Friendly - I am always approachable and carry a friendly demeanour.

Confident -

Hard Working -

29
Q

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

A

My Strengths are:

Problem solving

Communication

My main weakness that I have tried to address has been delegating.

Occasionally when working in teams I would be reluctant to delegate some work as I naturally enjoy responsibility and sometimes take on too much work.

I have realised that this is not beneficial for the team or myself so I have actively ensured that when working in a team tasks are assigned relatively equally to everyone.
