General Science- The Classification of Living Things Flashcards
What is the order of the classification schemes from narrowest to broadest?
Species (Narrowest) Genus Family Order Class Phylum Kingdom Domain (Broadest)
The broadest category is what?
Domain
How many domains are there?

What contains several classes?
Phylum
What contains several orders?

Which contains several related genera?
Family
Which contains several related species?
Genus
Which contains organisms so similar that they can only reproduce with one another to create viable fertile offspring?
Species
What are the three domains?
Eukaryota, Bacteria, and Archaea
All living things whose cells have nuclei are in this domain. Almost all multi-celled organisms are in this domain.
Eukaryota
Both of these domains contain single-celled organisms whose cells do not have nuclei. Living things in these domains are distinguishable by metabolic and chemical differences.
Bacteria and Archaea
What are the 6 Kingdoms called?
Monera 1 Monera 2 Protista Fungi Plantae Animalia
Why is Kingdom Monera broken up into 2?
One for Bacteria and the other for Archaea
This kingdom is considered the most primitive kingdom and includes bacteria, algae and prokaryotic life forms.
Monera
This kingdom contains the simplest Eukaryotes. Protozoa, Algae, Slime, and Water Molds. Ancestor Organisms to plants, animals, and fungi. They can also move around by means of flagella. Some are photosynthetic.
Protista
This kingdom includes mushrooms, bread molds, and yeasts. They lack the ability to photosynthesize because they are decomposers.
Fungi
This kingdom has the ability to produce via photosynthesis.
Plantae
Consumer the producers for energy as well as other organisms. They can either be vertebrates or invertebrates. Humans belong to this kingdom.
Animalia
