Electronics Information- Electronic Flow Theory Flashcards
The 2 subatomic parts found within the nucleus of an atom are called what?
Protons and Neutrons
The third subatomic particle is what?
The Electron
What is the charge of an electron?
Negative
Electricity is what?
The movement of Electrons
Electrons occupy various energy levels around the nucleus called what?
Shells
Each time one shell becomes full of electrons what happens?
A new shell begins.
The outer shell of an atom is known as the what?
Valence Shell
The number of electrons in the Valence Shell determine what about an element?
Whether it is a conductor, semi-conductor, or an insulator.
In many elements, what is the maximum number of electrons a valence shell could hold.
8
An element that allows electrons to flow freely. One or more mobile valence electrons per atom that are free to move from one atom to another, as each valence shell has more empty spots than electrons.
Conductor
Has a valence shell that is at least more than half full or full, making it not conduct electricity at all. All the electrons are tightly bound and will not leave their packed valence shells.
Insulator
When a valence shell that is exactly half full is neither a good conductor or a good insulator, but it has useful properties for making electronic components.
Semi-Conductor
