General Anesthetics Flashcards
1
Q
3 IV GAs
A
Propofol, etomidate, thiopental
2
Q
Most Important Criterion
A
Controllable - rapid induction and recovery
3
Q
2 Mech Theories
A
Lipid Theory - alters membrane, higher lipid solubility = more potent
Protein Theory - binds hydrophobic regions of GABAa Rs and enhances function
4
Q
MAC (def and 2 points)
A
Minimum Alveolar concentration - 50% of patients don’t report pain on incision. Very steep curve. Also MACs for different drugs are additive
5
Q
Blood Solubility
A
Has to reach partial pressure to move into membranes/tissues, so high blood solubility means slow and low means fast
6
Q
4 Stages of Anesthesia (not always seen w/ modern drugs)
A
Analgesia
Excitement
Surgical Anesthesia
Medullary Paralysis (death)
