General anatomy Flashcards
Anatomical position, planes and axes
Describe the anatomical position
Legs together, arms palms up, feet forward
Name the three planes
Sagittal, frontal (coronal), transverse
Name the movements possible in the sagittal plane
Flexion (forwards), extension (backwards), dorsiflexion (decreasing angle b/w anterior foot and anterior tibia), plantar flexion (increasing angle b/w anterior foot and anterior tibia)
- Remember knee is opposite way round
Name the movements possible in the frontal plane
Adduction (towards mid-line), abduction (away from mid-line), inversion, eversion
Name the movements possible in the transverse plane
Lateral rotation, medial rotation, supination, (THINK palm up), pronation (THINK palm down)
Define superior
Towards the top or above another
Define inferior
Towards the bottom or below another
Define anterior
Towards the front
Define posterior
Towards the back
Define deep
Further from the surface
Define superficial
Closer to the surface
Define proximal
Closer to the trunk/ the root of the limb
Define distal
Further from the trunk/ the root of the limb
Define unilateral
Movement on side of the body
Define bilateral
Movement on both sides of the body
