Descending pathways Flashcards
Overview of the descending pathways of the CNS
What are the two categories of the descending pathways?
Lateral and medial
Where are the lateral pathways found?
Lateral part of the ventral horn
Where are the medial pathways found?
Medial part of the ventral horn
What does the lateral pathway control?
Distal parts of the body; lateral musculature
What does the medial pathway control?
Proximal parts of the body; medial musculature
What are the two tracts of the lateral pathway?
Corticospinal and rubrospinal
Where does the corticospinal tract originate from?
Primary motor, premotor, and somatosensory cortexes
What does the corticospinal tract control?
Very distal movements (e.g. hands and fingers)
What are hatchings?
Terminations of corticospinal fibres; synapses where corticospinal fibres connect directly to motor neurones in ventral horn
What is the implication of having more hatchings?
Have finer distal control
Where does the rubrospinal tract originate from?
Red nucleus in midbrain
Why is the red nucleus named so?
Is very vascular
Where does the rubrospinal tract receive information from?
Cerebellum + primary motor cortex
What does the rubrospinal tract control?
Fore- and hind-limbs, as fibres terminate primarily at cervical and lumbar enlargements of the cord
If the corticospinal tract is injured, what happens?
Rubrospinal tract compensates almost completely, but cannot compensate for individual control of digits; fingers can only be used together
