The characteristics of people as males or females
Gender
A set of expectations that prescribes how male and females should act, think and feel.
Gender role
The theory stating that gender differences mainly result from contrasting roles of females and males, with females having less power and status and controlling fewer resources than males
Social role theory
Theory emphasising that children and adolescence gender development occurs through observation and imitation of gender behaviour, and through rewards and punishments they experience for gender appropriate and gender inappropriate behaviour
Social cognitive theory of gender
Theory stating that an individual’s attention and behaviour are guided by an internal motivation to conform to gender-bias sociocultural standards and stereotypes
Gender schema theory
Broad categories that reflect our impressions and beliefs about males and females
Gender stereotypes
The language of conversation establishing connections and negotiating relationships
Rapport talk
Talk that gives information, such as public speaking
Report talk
Theory emphasising the importance of contexts. The macrosystem includes cross-cultural comparisons
Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory
The presence of a high degree of desirable feminine and masculine characteristics in the same individual
Androgyny
The belief that when an individual’s competence is at issue, it should be conceptualised not on the basis of masculinity, femininity or androgyny but on an individual basis
Gender-role transcendence
Hypothesis stating that psychological and behaviour differences between boys and girls become greater during early adolescence because increased socialisation pressure to conform to masculine and feminine gender roles
