Gastrulation Flashcards
What is meant by “the inner cell mass is pluripotent”
These cells have the ability to form all cells of the mature organism
What is the bilaminar embryonic disc?
Formed from the epiblast and hypoblast
What is the name given to epiblast cells lining the amniotic cavity?
Amnioblasts
What is the extracoelomic membrane?
Formed from the hypoblast cells
What is the extraembryonic mesoderm?
Surrounds the embryo entirely
Formed of cut-trophoblast and extracoelomic cells that have differentiated
What is the chorionic cavity?
Formed from cavities that appear in the extraembryonic mesoderm
How many days after fertilisation for the chorionic cavity to form?
13 days
What is the primitive streak?
1st stage of gastrulation
Appears on the surface of the epiblast at the caudal end
What is the primitive node?
Develops at the cephalic end
What happens at the primitive streak?
Cells of the epiblast migrate and detach from the epiblast layer
What is invagination?
Cells migrating between epiblast and hypoblast layers
What are the three germ layers?
Ectoderm
Mesoderm
Endoderm
When does the embryonic endoderm?
The first epiblast cells that invaginate
What is the ectoderm formed from?
Epiblast cells that do not invaginate
What happens to individual cells at the primitive streak?
Loss of polarity and basal lamina
Adopt morphology called bottle cells
Once through the streak become mesechymal cells
