Gastric Acid Secretion and its Prevention Flashcards
Name the different contributions to body fluid
saliva, gastric juice, pancreatic juice, bile, intestinal juice
What is the function of lysozyme?
destroys bacterial membranes
What is the function of growth factors?
stimulate epithelial proliferation which is particularly protective for the oesophageal epithelium which is subject to abrasion
Where is mucus secreted in the stomach?
By mucous cells over the entire luminal surface which extend down into glands as mucous neck cells which secrete bicarbonate-rich mucus to coat and lubricate the gastric surface to protect the epithelium
Where is acid secreted in the stomach?
by parietal cells (secrete HCl) which activates pepsinogen and inactivates any ingested microorganisms
Where are proteases secreted in the stomach?
pepsinogen is secreted by chief cells which is activated by a low pH to pepsin
What is the role of lipase?
initiates triglyceride digestion
What is the role of intrinsic factor?
glycoproteins from parietal and chief cells bind vitamin B12 in the intestine in order to facilitate absorption
What’s the most common cause of peptic ulcer?
Helicobacter pylori which is treated with combination of 2 different types of antibiotic and a protein pump inhibitor
What’s the second most common cause of peptic ulcer?
NSAIDS
