Gas Exchange - Lungfish Flashcards
Do all air breathing fish uses lungs? What would they use instead
No, some use buccal air gulping to swallow air and transport it across the skin and digestive tract where oxygen is absorbed
How well-developed are the lungs of lungfish?
Well developed and complex with lots of folds
What are the two types of lungfish?
Obligate and facultative
What are obligate lungfish?
Need to breathe air periodically
What are facultative lungfish?
Can breathe air if they need to, but will use their gills most of the time
Are most lungfish obligate or facultative?
Facultative
What is an advantage of being a facultative lungfish vs an obligate lungfish?
They don’t have to periodically go to the surface and potentially be exposed to predators
What is the first step in the respiratory cycle of lungfish?
Mouth opens, the buccal cavity expands, and air enters the buccal cavity
What is the second step in the respiratory cycle of lungfish?
Mouth closes, buccal cavity compresses, air enters the anterior chamber
What is the third step in the respiratory cycle of lungfish?
The anterior chamber closes, the posterior chamber contracts, depleted air exhaled from the posterior chamber, old air leaves through the operculum
What is the fourth step in the respiratory cycle of lungfish?
Anterior chamber opens, fresh air flows into the posterior chamber
