Gas Exchange - Amphibians Flashcards
Aside from the lungs, what other type of respiration is common in amphibians?
Cutaneous respiration
What respiratory organs do amphibians use in the larval form?
External gills
What respiratory organs do amphibians use in the adult form?
Lungs
What type of breathing do bullfrogs use?
Buccal force pump
What is the glottis?
A valve in frog lungs
What is the first step of the respiratory cycle of bullfrogs?
Air enters the buccal cavity, the glottis is closed, buccal cavity expands
What is the second step of the respiratory cycle of bullfrogs?
The glottis opens, chest cavity compresses and forces the old air out
What is the third step of the respiratory cycle of bullfrogs?
Lung pressure drops, the nares close, floor of the buccal cavity rises and forces the new air into the lungs
What is the fourth step of the respiratory cycle of bullfrogs?
The glottis closes, new air is trapped inside the lungs and gas exchange occurs
Why are frogs called intermittent breathers?
They can vary the amount of air they breathe out depending on their needs
What is an inflation breath? What step in the respiratory cycle is this done?
The frog reduces the amount of air it breathes out. Occurs in step 2
What is an deflation breath? What step in the respiratory cycle is this done?
The frog increases the amount of air it breathes out. Occurs in step 2
