Why is the Modified pen grasp important? (3)
Allows for precise control
Detection of rough areas on tooth surface
Lessens mucoskeletal stress
Parts of Periodontal Instrument
- Handle- used to hold
- Shank- rod shaped length of metal located between handle and working end of instrument
-generally circular and smooth
-may be straight or bent in some places - Working End- may be sharp or flattened
-Can appear wire like, look like a tiny ruler, or even a small mirror
-1 or 2 ends

Placement: on handle, opposite each other @ or near junction of handle and shank
Function: hold instrument
Middle finger
Placement and function
Placement: rests LIGHTLY against shank
Function: helps to guide working end
Feels vibrations from working end to shank
Ring finger
Placement and function
Fulcrum
Placement: on tooth (incisal or occlusal edge), ahead of the other fingers in the grasp (1-4 fingers away)
Function: stabilizes and supports the hand for control and strength
Little finger
No function but needs to be held near ring finger
Proper glove fit
Why is it important?
Important to avoid muscle strain during instrumentation
Loose fitting across palm and wrist areas
What does a successful instrumentation technique depend on?
Precise placement of each finger in modified pen grasp
Do nitrile or latex gloves provide more grip function?
Nitrile
