What are fungi?
They are multicellular and unicellular eukaryotes
What do fungi do?
They feed on dead or decaying organic material (saprophytes)
What fungi are unicellular?
Yeasts
What is fungi cell wall made of?
Chitin
What are fungi composed of?
Slender filaments called hyphae
What is a mass of hyphae called?
Mycelium
How do fungi reproduce?
Both asexually and sexually
What are the 5 branches of fungi?
- Chytrids
- common moulds
- sac fungi (truffles)
- club fungi (mushrooms)
- imperfect fungi (penicillin)
What size are fungi?
Vary from very small to very large
Diseases caused by fungi are called?
Mycoses
Mycoses can be?
- superficial
- cutaneous
- subcutaneous
- systemic
What do dermatophytes do?
Cause superficial infections of the skin, hair and nails called dermatomycosis.
Examples of fungal infections are?
Candidiasis, ringworm (tinea) and athletes foot.
How are fungal infections transmitted?
By direct or indirect contact with contaminated humans, animals or objects
