How do you treat fungal disease?
Oral Antifungal (-azole drug)
This Antifungal penetrates bone well but poorly penetrates CNS and ocular tissues
Itraconazole
This Antifungal has a similar efficacy as itraconazole but may require longer course of treatment and costs less
Fluconazole
This Antifungal carries a serious risk of nephrotoxicity and is only given with patients that are unable to take an oral antifungal or their infection is resistant to -azole drugs
Amphotericin B
Anti-inflammatory doses of this are given to dampen pulmonary inflammation associated with fungal infections
Corticosteroids
This is a systemic mycotic infection caused by the Dimorphic fungus. It’s mycelial stage is found in soil and it converts to yeast form in the lungs
Histoplasmosis
