Feline Infectious Anemia Flashcards
What are the stages of feline infectious anemia?
Preparasitemic, Acute, Recovery, and Carrier
This is the time period from first to last major parasitemia stage
Acute stage
This is the time period from last major parasitemia to stabilization of hematocrit
Recovery stage
What population of cats have risk factors for feline infectious anemia?
Male, outdoor cats
What are clinical signs of feline infectious anemia?
Variable dependent on mycoplasma species, lethargy and anorexia, pale MM, tachycardia, icterus, splenomegaly, cyclic pyrexia
How do you diagnose feline infectious anemia?
Blood smear, PCR, and retroviral testing (for evidence of co-infections)
How do you treat feline infectious anemia?
Tetracyclines (doxycline, fluoroquinolones), supportive care, +/- prednisolone
This is a tick-transmitted intracellular protozoan infection of cats that is primarily transmitted by Dermacentor variabilis and amblyomma americanum
Cytauxzoon felis
What are some risk factors of cytauxzoon felis?
Outdoor cats in wooded areas, tick exposure
What are the two forms of cytauxzoon felis?
- Tissue phase (schizont)
- Erythrocyte phase (piroplasm)
- exposed cats develop both forms of
What are some clinical signs of cytauxzoon felis?
rapid disease, cat may die within a week of onset of signs
Lethargy and anorexia, fever, dehydration, lymphadenomegaly, hepatosplenomegaly, icterus
Notably, respiratory distress, vocalizing with generalized pain, petechiae, and neurological signs
How do you get a definitive diagnosis for cytauxzoon felis?
Piroplasms seen on blood smear during the erythrocyte phase
What is the current recommended treatment for cytauxzoon felis?
Atovaquone (antiprotozoal agent) and Azithromycin
What is the most pathogenic organism that causes hemotropic mycoplasmosis?
Mycoplasma haemofelis
