Feline Endocrine Diseases Flashcards
Where does the issue lie for insulin resistance in diabetic cats for the following diseases:
- Hyperadrenocorticism
- Acromegaly
- Hyperthyroidism
- Hyperadrenocorticism —> pituitary or adrenal tumor
- Acromegaly —> pituitary tumor
- Hyperthyroidism —> thyroid tumor
ACTH-dependent Cushing’s syndrome depends on the _______ and ACTH independent Cushing’s syndrome depends on the _______
Pituitary gland; adrenal gland
Hyperadrenocorticism is most common in (older/younger) cats
Older (Avg. 10 years)
What are the clinical signs of hyperadrenocorticism?
PU/PD, abdominal enlargement, polyphagia, skin atrophy, etc
What kind of imaging would you do for suspect hyperadrenocorticism?
AUS of adrenal glands, CT or MRI for pituitary
What are the two types of adrenal testing you can do?
LDDST or ACTH stim (poor sensitivity in cats)
What medication can you use for hyperadrenocorticism?
Trilostane
What are some clinical signs of cats with acromegaly?
Insulin-resistant diabetes, stridor, heart failure, neurological
How do you diagnose acromegaly in a cat?
- IGF-1 levels
- CT/MRI
How do you treat acromegaly in cats?
Hypophysectomy, radiation therapy, medical therapy
What medications can you use to treat acromegaly?
Pasireotide or Cabergoline
What are the two forms of primary hyperaldosteronism?
Tumor and idiopathic hyperplasia
What are some clinical signs of primary aldosteronism?
- cervical ventroflexion
- weakness/collapse
- dysphasia
- ataxia
- ocular signs
- blindness
How do you diagnose primary aldosteronism?
Ultrasound - adrenal tumor or bilateral enlargement
- Hypokalemia
- Elevated aldosterone
- Perform plasma aldosterone concentration
How do you treat primary hyperaldosteronism?
Unilateral adrenalectomy
- Spironolactone
- IV KCL supplementation
- treatment of underlying disease
