positioning
involves properly maintaining a patient’s neutral body alignment by preventing hyperextension and extreme lateral rotation to prevent complications of immobility or injury.
patient positioning
The patient lies on his back with his head and shoulders are slightly elevated. One pillow is given under the head. His legs should be slightly flexed. A small pillow is placed under his knees
supine position
Patient lies on left side with legs flexed at thighs. the upper leg is flexed more than the lower. a pillow is kept in front of the abdomen and at the back and one under the upper leg
-used for giving back care enemas and colonic
- exam of perineum or rectum inserting suppositories
- for taking rectal temp
- for change of position
- relaxing position
lateral position
a patient lies flat on abdomen. head turned sideways with one soft pillow is given under head, extra pillow is given under the ankles to keep toes from touching the bed
- prevent aspiration of saliva and mucus
- tonsils, vesicovaginal fistula and spinal cases
- bed sores
-abdominal distention
-burns on back
prone position
patient lies on back, knees fully flexed, thighs flexed and externally rotated feet flat on bed
- used for catheterization, vaginal douche, vulval, rectal exam
- vaginal operations and inserting tampons
- convalescent period
dorsal recumbent position
it’s useful with pt. have breathing problems to improve lung expanding by diaphragm down ward with abdomen with the angle 30 and 45
- to relieve dyspnea
- improve circulation
- prevent thrombosis
-assist drainage from abdomen
fowler and semi fowler position
the patient lies on her back, the legs are separated and thighs are flexed on the abdomen and the legs are on the thighs. patients buttocks are kept on the edge of the table and legs are supported by stirrups
- given during gynecological exam on genitourinary system
- for delivery of baby
- for rectal
lithotomy position
Patient rests on the knees and the chest. The head is turned to one side with one check on a pillow. a pillow is placed under the chest. the weight is on the chest and knees
- used for sigmoidoscopy
- vaginal rectal exam
- used in first aid treatment in cord prolapse or uterus
- exercise for postpartum and gynecology patients
knee chest position
The patient lie on his back. the patient head is low. foot of the bed is elevated at 45 degree angle. body is on inclined place and the legs hang downward over the end of the table
- used in emergency situations like shock and hemorrhage
- vaginal surgeries
-displace intestine from pelvic cavity into upper abdomen
- used during operations on the pelvic organ
- arrest bleeding from the lower limb
trendelenburg’s position
is similar to the lateral position except that the patient weight is on the anterior aspects of the shoulder girdle and hip. patent lower arm is behind him and upper arm is flexed at the shoulder and elbow
