Actions can happen quickly which is good in high demand and emergencies

Lower skilled staff do not have pressure to make decisions
Limitations of autocratic leadership
Demotivating for staff that are higher skilled because they do not feel valued or involved
Quality of decisions might be poorer
Features of paternalistic leadership
A softer form of autocratic leadership - leader decides what is best for employees and addresses their needs
Little delegation
Typical paternalistic leader explains the specific reason as to why he/she has taken certain actions
Features of democratic leadership
Focus of power is more with the group as a whole
Leadership functions are shared within the group
Employees have greater involvement in decision making
Emphasis on delegation and consultation, although leader has the final say
Benefits of democratic leadership
Employees know the business well so are better able to make informed decisions
Can help motivate employees, leading to more productivity and higher retention
Better quality decisions
Limitations of democratic leadership
Slows down decision making - not good in emergencies
May be conflict in decision making
Less experienced staff may not feel in a position to make decisions and may want to be told what to do
Features of laissez-faire leadership
Gives employees little direction
Responsibility for decision making lies with individuals and the group
Leaders get employees to choose how to complete objectives, make decisions and resolve problems on their own
Benefits of laissez-faire leadership
Employees can feel motivated
Decisions can be made quickly
Limitation of laissez-faire leadership
Employees might not be motivated which can result in lower productivity and more waste
