Communication Flashcards
Why is effective communication important?
The number of mistakes within a business will be reduced
It will speed up decision making within a business
Employees will feel motivated because they are clear about what to do and how to do it
It can be a marketing tool - if communication reachers its target market successfully then this should generate additional sales
Formal communication
Formal communication within an organisation are those that take place using agreed rules and procedures
Eg - board meeting
Informal communication
Informal communication are those that are not based upon any set measures
Eg - conversations in the staff rooms
Group norms
Rules or guidelines that reflect expectations of how group members should act and interact.
Implicit norms
When people may simply assume that certain norms exist and accept them ‘by unspoken consent’
Explicit norms
When group norms are stated outright, either orally or in writing
Individual objectives
Set for a single employee
Eg - a slow programmer may be set a time-based target
Group objectives
Set for the team
Eg - a group of retail assistants may be set a sales target for the shop that they work in
What might happen to the understanding of communication if there are a lot of team members with dominant personalities in a formal team meeting?
Certain groups may cause misunderstandings. Dominant employees (ie those who are confident and may communicate quite bluntly) can take over / disrupt a meeting and so the crucial messages might get lost.
What might happen if an employee within an informal social group does not like a message that they have been given individually through a formal medium?
Groups may mean that communication from formal sources is ‘hijacked’ by informal groups, and then misrepresented
What might the communication model show us?
How to communicate effectively
That barriers can hinder effective communication
