What is the 1st ‘Golden Rule’ of animal rescue?
Never release an animal until you have somewhere for it to go
What legislative instrument covers animal rescue activities?
Animal Rescue Act 2005, LFB will aim to move an animal from a place of Danger to a place of Safety as humanely as possible
How long are the longest rescue strops?
9 metres
If an animal has a ‘Round Hoof’ will it raise its front legs or back legs first?
Front First - round hoof
Back First - cloven hood
What does ‘putting a smile on the line’ mean?
Not pulling the line to the head restraint tight, soft hands
What is the first action in any Large Animal Rescue?
Fitting a head restraint
What is the most common type of injury caused by Equine handling?
Crush injuries, some breeds of Horse weigh over 1000 kg, even a pony can weigh over 500 kg
When holding a line during a rescue what must you never do?
Wrap it around your hand
Prior to a large animal rescue what may be used to assist the animal to self rescue?
Food (a bucket of pebbles)
Why is the lower leg a particularly vulnerable part of a horse?
It has no muscle and the skin is thin making them susceptible to puncture wounds and degloving
What does BEVA stand for?
British Equine Vet Association
There are 3 golden rules of Equine rescue. ‘Never release an animal until it has somewhere to go to’ is one what are the other 2?
‘A head restraint (head collar or emergency halter) must be put on prior to rescue’ and ‘Rescuers must have a safe egress route’
When a horse is on its side where should the work be carried out?

Helmet, to be worn by all in the risk area
When skidding a horse what must the IC try to ensure?
That the ground is soft and will not damage the side of the horse
Where is a horses only blind spot?
A small area ruffly covering the tail
IC’s may come under intense pressure to ‘Do Something’. When an animal is thrashing around what must be done before a rescue attempt is made?
The animal must be sedated
When used by an Equine vet what does the phrase ‘Not Viable’ mean?
That the Horses injuries are such that it will be destroyed even if it is rescued
Approximately how many horses are believed to be stabled within the confines of the M25: 7000, 70,000 or 700,000?

There are 3 ways that an IC should seek to get an Equine vet on scene, what are they?
1) The owner arranges for a Vet to attend.
2) The RSPCA attend and arrange a Vet
3) Control contacts BEVA who arrange the attendance of a Vet.
Note that owners may be reluctant due to the cost but it is their responsibility.
Why might a horses ears be sensitive, particularly in warm weather?
Ear mites
Can you brake a horses tail?
Yes, great care should be taken to avoid damaging it as it is the end of its spine
If a horse is sedated will it stand or fall?
A horse will stand but it’s head will drop. A cloven hoofed animal such as a cow will drop (a horse will still drop if it is anaesthetised)
If a Vet states that an animal is ‘Coming Light’ what do they mean?
The sedative is wearing off
On what side of a Horse will a handler normally be?
The LEFT and all work should be carried out on the same side as the handler.
Are a horses hind (rear) hoofs round or oval in shape?
Oval, the front hoofs are round

1.8 meters
What does a RED bandage or bow tied to the tail of a horse indicate?
That it is a ‘Kicker’ BEWARE!
When handling rescue tools, what principle should be adopted and why?
Keep the tools ‘Airborne’, on the ground they are trip hazard or may be lost
Which 2 types of Head Restraint do LFB use on horses?
‘Head Collar’ and ‘Emergency Rope Halter’

There are 2 danger zones when effecting a horse rescue that force personnel to work spine-side, what are they?
‘The Kicking Zone’ and ‘The Head Butt Zone’
What is an ‘IV’ injection?
An ‘Intravenous Injection’. IV is a very effective way of administering sedation to a Horse and is made in the Jugular Groove on the horses neck.
Why should ‘Chemical’ and ‘Physical’ restraints not be used together?
Physical restraint produces adrenaline which counteracts the effect of chemical restraints
