What does DNA stand for
Deoxyribonucleic Acid

Why is DNA Important?
- It places a suspect at a crime scene
- Can be checked against historic/unsolved crime
- Prevent further crimes from a profile stored on the national data bank
Where do you find legislation for taking DNA?
Criminal Investigations act 1995
What are the different DNA sample types/situations?
- Voluntary
- Post-Conviction
- Suspect
- Dual
- Intention to charge
Where are DNA Samples stored and checked?
- Temporary Data bank
- National DNA bank
What are three methods for DNA sampling?
- DNA buccal (Mouth swab)
- Fingerprick (Blood sample)
- Venous blood sample
Who takes a DNA sample?
- Police Constable

Constable have the authority under 24J to take a sample from an adult for what kind of offence?
Imprisonable
Constables have authority to under section 24K to take a sample from a young person for what kind of offence?
- Any offence or attempt punishment by a term of imprisonment of 7 years
- Offence against any of the provisions of Part 1, Part 2 or Part 3 of the act
I if detaining for a DNA sample the sample must be obtained before what two options?
- Released on Summons/bailed to appear
- Or appears before the court on that same day
When intending to charge, what 5 situations can you not take DNA from the donor?!
When somebody is:
- Warned
- Offered a pre-charge warning
- Detained under a different enactment
- arrested for an offence that is not an imprisonable offence
- When you have not yet decided that you will charger a person for the offence
An adult offence in relation to DNA is an imprisonable offence and what other?!

A donor providing a voluntary example must give their consent. What must they supply for their consent to be valid?
Must give their consent in writing and sign it OR orally and recorded on video
Who must give consent for a voluntary sample from a young person?
The same as an adult (Written and Signed OR Orally and Video recorded) and the same from their parent or caregiver
