Fossils quiz Flashcards
What are fossils?
The remains, traces, or imprints at once living organisms presereves in rocks.
What are vestigial structures?
What are homologous structures?
Similar body parts that might have different functions, but have similar DNA and indicate a common ancestor
What are analogous structures?
Structures with a similar function but not a similar anatomy, dosent indicate a common ancestor, or shared DNA
What is the law of superposition?
The farther down in the sediment a fossil is the older it is. The higher it is, the younger.
What is anatomy?
The scientific study of the structure and organization of living organisms, particularly the human body
What is embryology?
The branch of biology and medicine concerned with the study of embryos and their development.
What is DNA?
Molecule that stores genetic information. Sections of DNA called genes have the instructions to build proteins
We compare the DNA sequences of different organisms
What is the term for the entire genetic material of an organism?
Genome
What do we call structures found in different species that have shared ancestry?
Homologous Structures
What do we call structures found in different species that are similar in function but that evolved independently?
Analogous Structures
