Forgetting & Individual Differences Flashcards
WHy do we forget?
emotional factors
cognitive factors
biological factors
What cognitive factors cause you to forget?
shallow processing when encoding
decay, interference or poor organisation of storage
retrieval failure
What biological factors cause you to forget?
ageing
disease
trauma
Proactive interference =
previously learnt material interferes with new material
Retroactive interference =
new material interferes with previously learned material
Everyday examples of retrieval failure
Tip of the tongue effect
Mind blanks
How is memory stereotyped according to age?
memory failure:
old (less ability)
or
lazy (young)
Alzheimer’s diesease
A progressive form of dementia characterised by memory deficits
With alzheimer’s what is still intact?
phonological loop
With Alzheimer’s what is impaired?
LTM
working memory
Main causes of Amnesia:
head trauma, disease, prolonged alcohol abuse (Korsakoff’s syndrome)
Retrograde amnesia =
the loss of memories acquired BEFORE a traumatic event
Anterograde amnesia =
the loss of ability to form new memories AFTER a traumatic event
The amnesic syndrome impairs?
Anterograde LTM
Temporarily graded retrograde amnesia =
retrograde amnesia where there is a greater loss of memories that occurred more recently prior to the traumatic event, than for memories that occurred in the distant past
