Forearm fractures Flashcards
Radius and Ulna fractures
Connected proximally and distally by rings of strong ligaments. Meaning that if a fracture occurs in one bone it is likely there is a fracture in the other
Nighstick fracture
Fracture of the ulnar shaft
Commonly associated with Monteggia injury
Fracture of both forearm bones: treatment
ORIF with plates and screws
Flexible intramedullary nails can be used in highly unstable cases
in children- plaster cast
Monteggia fracture
Fracture of proximal ulna with dislocation of distal radius
Monteggia fracture treatment
ORIF
Galeazzi fracture
Fracture of the distal radius and dislocation of proximal ulna
Galeazzi fracture treatment
ORIF
Distal radius fracture aetiology
Falling onto outstretched hand
Colles Fracture
Extra-articular fracture of the distal radius within an inch of the articular surface and dorsal displacement
Colles fracture associations
Fracture of the ulnar styloid process
Median nerve compression
Can damage extensor polices longus
Colle’s Fracture treatment
Minimally displaced and angulated
-splintage alone
Angulation beyond neutral
-manipulation
Plaster cast
percutaneous wires or ORIF
-If unstable after reduction or dorsal communication
Smiths fracture
VOlarly displaced or angulated extra articular fracture of the distal radius
Smiths fracture aetiology
Falling onto the back of a flexed wrist
Smiths fracture treatment
ORIF with plate and screws
highly unstable
Barton’s Fracture
Intra-articular fracture of the distal radius involving dorsal or solar rims.
Carpal bones of the wrist subluxation with the displaced rim fragments
