food security and gmos Flashcards
food security def
occurs when all people are able to access safe and nutricious food to meet their requirements for a healthy life, in ways the planet can sustain in the future
problems with FS
faces challenges meaning people can’t access adequate food worldwide
must be sustainable: meet current needs without affecting ability to meet demands in the future
Factors affecting FS
rising population (more ppl to feed)
diets change, food transported worldwide, more meat consumed ( resource intensive)
new pests kill crops and livestock, can lead to famine
environmental changes as a result of climate change can decrease food yields
price increase of food as agricultural inputs are expensive
conflicts disrupt food production and transportation
increase in global food production
land cleared for agriculture
application of fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals
selective breeding
genetic modification
GMOs
organisms whose genome have been modifies ( usually adding a helpful gene such as pest resistance)
what may crops be modified for
pest resistance- reduce crop damage and incr yield
increased nutrients- eg, adding vitamin A to rice (golden rice) to reduce deficiency diseases which can cause blindness
drought/ virus/flood/ pesticide resistance
increased yield
mycoprotein
used as high protein meat alternative
made by fungi
grown in aerobic conditions on glucose syrup
