B4 helping the heart Flashcards
stents
solve CHD
holds blood vessel open
used to open up blocked artery, to ensure blood flow
release drugs to prevent blood clots
statins
help for people at risk of cdv disease
reduce blood cholesterol, alters balance of it
slows down rate at which fatty material is deposited in coronary arteries ( fatty build up caused by LDL cholesterol)
increase HDL (good) cholesterol to get rid of fatty deposits
decease LDL (bad) cholesterol
leaky valves
heart valves may not open fully over time/ leak / stiffen - reduces efficiency
mechanical valves replace these
biological valves taken from pigs or cattle last 12-15 years
dsvtg of mechanical valves
require surgery ( has risks)
take medicine for rest of life to prevent blood clotting
pacemaker
natural pacemaker in right atrium of heart
heart beats too slowly -> not enough oxygen
too quickly -> cannot pump blood properly
artificial pacemaker
corrects irregularities in heart rate
attached to heart by two wires
sends electrical signals to stimulate heart to beat properly
need regular check ups throughout life
artificial hearts
transplants can take too long - need to find tissue match
won’t be rejected by body
risk of blood clotting
used to give diseased hearts a rest to recover
resources and cost means AH aren’t widely used
benefit of stent
surgery is relatively quick
effective for a long time
issues of stents
surgery has risks
could induce heart attack
possibly lead to infection
patient could later develop bloody clot near stent
downside of statins
- medicine so needs to be taken regularly
- has side effects
eg, head aches, kidney failure
can take a long time to see positive effects
issues of biological heart transplant
surgery is complicated
takes a long time to find donor
could be rejected and destroyed by body
