biodiversity Flashcards
biodiversity def
variety of diff species on earth, or within an ecosystem
functions of good biodiversity
maintains stable ecosystem
(a small change will have less of an effect on ecosystem as a whole)
animals pollinate plants which are used for food and can be used to some medicines
factors reducing biodiversity
incr pop
demands for new things use up raw materials + energy is required to manufacture materials
clearing out natural ecosystem (deforestation)
increased waste goes to land ,water or air
increased greenhouse gas from burning fossil fuels
- sulphur dioxide damages animals and environments
breeding programmes
improves biodiversity
for endangered species to prevent extinction
animals safely bred in captivity
then released back into wild to join population or form a new one
disadvtg of breeding programmes
only works if environment released back into is safe or numbers will just decrease again
(protected areas are being created and rare habitats regenerated , which if successful, will mean breeding programmes will no longer be needed)
maintaining biodiversity
reduce bad practices which cause damage
reduce impact of practices and help ecosystem withstand them
wildlife conservation
reduce impact of harmful, but necessary practices like farming
governments implement laws or use money to help this
eg, set quotas to limit deforestation and amount of CO2 which can be released by a business
individuals: can recycle and limit products bought to reduce amnt of waste in landfill
benefit of less landfill
more land left undamaged
fewer chemicals able to seep into environment
difficulty of implementing changes
protecting biodiversity is expensive
- people who dont understand importance will spend money elsewhere
environment will have to be damaged in order to maintain current standards of living
