Food-Related Consumer Issues Flashcards
1
Q
Genetically modified foods
A
foods possessing desired characteristics as a result of genetic manipulation
2
Q
3 genetically modified crops
A
- soya beans
- corn
- cotton
3
Q
GM
A
Genetically Modified
4
Q
Advantages of GM crops
A
- crops can be more pest- and herbicide resistant
- crops can be resistant to diseases and unfavourable conditions
- crop yields can improve
- products are cheaper due to lower production costs
- crops can be more nutritious
5
Q
Disadvantages of GM crops
A
- products can cause allergic reactions
- the effect of transferred genes in other products is unclear
- transferred genes could have negative impacts on other organisms
- through consumption, people could become resistant to antibiotics
- there are ethical questions about transferring genes
6
Q
Organically produced foods
A
food produced through agricultural methods that sustain the health and productivity of the ecosystem without the use of chemicals
7
Q
features of organic food production
A
- based on crop rotation and environmentally friendly practices
- makes use of recycled organic material ie. compost
- natural pesticides are used
- no runoff of chemicals into water = cleaner water
8
Q
Advantages of organically produced foods
A
- products are produced without use of chemicals or fertilisers
- the food tastes better
- plants are more resistant to disease, pests and drought
- less pollution
- more employment opportunities available
9
Q
Disadvantages of organically produced foods
A
- food produced is more expensive
- products have a shorter shelf life
- farming is time consuming and labour intensive
- appearance of food is not perfect
- shortage of locally produced organic products
10
Q
Food Irradiation
A
when foods are treated with very short light and radio waves that penetrate the food and kill harmful organisms and insects
11
Q
Advantages of food irradiation
A
- food borne diseases and spoilage is prevented
- it delays or stops the normal ripening or rotting processes = longer shelf life
- sprouting of bulbs and roots in veg is prevented = less waste
- insects and bacteria on/in imported and exported foods are destroyed
- makes food last longer = less waste
12
Q
Disadvantages of food irradiation
A
- insufficient/ long term irradiation could lead to harmful microorganisms becoming resistant
- food products become more expensive after irradiation
- it reduced or destroys certain vitamins (eg. vit C, E)
- it does not destroy all harmful microorganisms
