lactose intolerance
inability to digest the sugar, lactose, found in dairy products
Cause of lactose intolerance
absence of enzyme lactase which breaks lactose into simple sugars that are easily absorbed by the blood
no enzyme = no digestion = fermentation = symptoms
5 symptoms of lactose intolerance
mild or severe:
- stomach ache
- nausea
- diarrhoea
- vomiting
- flatulence
Prevention of lactose intolerance (5)
- avoid dairy products
- eat less dairy products
- drink milk with other food
- read food labels
- use lactase drops or tablets
What is Gluten Intolerance?
genetic autoimmune disease where the allergic response to gluten inflammation and long term damage to the wall of the small intestine = malabsorption
3 causes of gluten intolerance
- unknown
- hereditary
- gluten prevents the wall of small intestine from absorbing nutrients which can lead to malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies
Prevention and management of gluten intolerance (3)
-avoid all foods containing WHEAT, BARLEY, RYE
-replace wheat with rice, corn, potatoes
read food labels
-take supplements if necessary
