Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)

A

Therapeutic class-antibacterial

Pharmacologic class- bacterial DNA replication inhibitor, flouroquinolone

Pregnancy category C

Contraindications-
Hypersensitivity to flouroquinolines
Pregnancy

Adverse effects-
Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea (at high doses)
Phototoxicity, headache, and dizziness
Tendonitis and tendon rupture

Patient family teaching-
Immediately report signs of potential allergy
Limit caffeine intake
Don’t take products with magnesium, calcium, iron, or aluminum
Avoid sunlight or you sunscreen and protective clothing
Drink 2 to 3 L of fluid per day unless contraindicated
Report sudden, unexplained joint pain
Report if no improvement after a few days of therapy
Immediately reports severe or persistent diarrhea with fever
Report nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain or discomfort
Do not drive or perform other hazardous activities until effects of drug are known
Take the drug exactly as prescribed
Do you not breast-feed
