Fluids Flashcards
Basal requirements (for 70kg man)
2-2.5L
1-2mmol/kg of sodium and potassium
What can happen if you infuse large amounts of NaCl- very quickly?
Can cause severe metabolic acidosis (H+ comes out of cells to neutralise Cl-)
NaCl equilibrates with which fluid compartment?
ECF (interstitial and plasma)
5% glucose equilibrates with which fluid compartment?
All of them
Which compartment does Hartmann’s solution equilibrate with?
ECF (interstitial and plasma)
Which compartments does gelofusine/colloid equilibrate
Increases plasma
Decreases interstitial fluid
(its a big molecule so water follows it)
Which fluid compartment affected in dehydration?
All of them
Which fluid compartment affected in hypovolaemia?
Plasma
Which fluid compartments affected in vomiting/diarrhoea?
Interstitial and plasma
Name 2 cyrstalloids
Hartmann’s
Saline
What is the quickest you can give potassium?
10mmol per hour (so a 40mmol/l bag would take 4 hours)
What type of monitoring does someone need if you are giving them calcium?
Should be on a cardiac monitor
How quickly can you give calcium replacement?
10mls of 10% at 1ml per minute
(so would take 10 minutes)
MUST BE ON A CARDIAC MONITOR WHEN YOU ARE GIVING THIS
How quickly can you give magnesium?
Can give 2g (8mmol) over 20 minutes
