Flight Planning Flashcards
How many centers are there in the US?
21
How long do you have to activate a flight plan before it’s cancled?
2 hours
Who gives you IFR clearance if departure has no clearance delivery?
- Ground Control
What are examples of TRACON?
Approach / Departure
How far is the controlling range of TRACON?
30nm from their location (primary airport. Usually “C” airspace)
How do I get IFR clearance when departing out of uncontrolled airspace?
- Contacting FSS by radio or telephone
What is clearance void time?
- Pilot must be airborne PRIOR to this time
- If getting clearance from uncontrolled airport you must be holding short of the runway
- If you don’t takeoff you must let FSS know before 30min after takeoff
What is release time?
- Pilot must takeoff AFTER this time
- Let FSS know what number you are for departure and follow instructions
How can you file a flight plan?
- FSS
- Radio (RCO/GCO)
- Phone 1800wxBrief - Online
- www.1800wxbrief.com
- www.flightplan.com - Electronic Flight Bag
- Foreflight etc. - With ATC
- Over the phone or radio
- “Pop-up-clearance” (transitioning from VFR to IFR)
- Subject to ATC workload and not guaranteed
- Must be at or above minimum IFR altitude
What section can I find the flight plan requirements?
91.173
You may not operate under IFR in controlled airspace unless:
- Filed on a flight plan
- Received appropriate ATC clearance
- Legal to fly in uncontrolled airspace under IFR, but you must file a flight plan to enter controlled airspace
Flight plan must be filed at least how long before flight?
- At least 30 min prior to ETD
- Non-scheduled flights above FL230 should be filed at least 4 hours before ETD
How is an IFR flight plan canceled?
- Towered Airport: ATC automatically cancels flight pln upon landing
- Un-towered Airports: Pilot Must cancel through ATC or FSS by radio or phone number
- In Flight: Pilot may cancel anytime if not in IMC or class A airspace
What are the weather minimums for an alternate airport be required for a flight plan?
- If 1 hour before or after ETA the weather is below:
- 2,000’ AGL
- 3 SM visibility
If the planned alternate airport has a precision approach, what are the weather minima requirements for that airport?
Ceiling: 600’
Visibility: 2 SM
