Chart Symbols Flashcards
When the airport name and city are the same, what will show on the airport data depiction?
Only the airport name is shown
What do these symbols mean?
They indicate an altitude change:
- MEA, MOCA, MAA change at other than NAVAIDs
What does the symbol of a racetrack pattern depict on an IFR chart?
Holding patterns
What does this number represent?
OROCA: Off Route Obstacle Clearance Altitude
- Quadrant altitude for off route altitudes for obstacle clearance
- Altitudes are normally 1,000’ above highest obstacle in non-mountainous terrain, and 2,000’ for mountainous terrain
What’s the difference between these two numbers?
- The number outside the box is the distance between 2 fixes
- Inside the box number indicates the distance between the entire airway between the two points
What does the *5000 guarantee you?
- That is the MOCA: Minimum Obstacle Clearance Altitude
- The guarantees you obstacle clearance, and signal reception is guaranteed if within 22 NM of the VOR
- MEA guarantees you both obstacle clearance and navigational signal for entire published victor airway
What do these points tell you?
- They tell you when to switch VOR frequencies to the respective VOR on your airway you’re traveling
- The numbers tell you the distance from the VOR
What’s the difference in stop marks along the route with these stop marks?
- If there are stop marks, it means that there’s a change in MEA along the route
- The absence of stop marks means there should be no change in MEA between that fix and the next
What does this number represent?
- It’s the total distance from respective VOR to that fix
What is this waypoint?
It’s a GPS waypoints
-You need a GPS/RNAV to find this waypoint
What is this airway depicted?
- A military route, it’s width is 5 miles either side of center of that route
- Larger thicker lines are larger than 5 miles either side of center route
How would we know, if any, if the VOR is a high or low VOR?
- It wouldn’t be depicted on the IFR chart
- You would need to look on the chart supplement and look for the “(H)” symbol next to the VOR
What does this symbol represent?
- It represents the respective airports localizer and the frequency can be found in the information box
What are these “T” airways?
These are GPS airways, and sometimes have different MEA’s, but they may have a maximum altitude shown with a marked with “MAA” before the max altitude
MSA assures the pilot of:
- 25 NM radius
- 1,000’ clearance over obstacles
- Doesn’t always assure acceptable nav signal coverage
