Fish Flashcards
What are the three groups of fish that are poisonous when ingested?
Sarcotoxic, ootoxic, hemotoxic
What toxins are produced by the sarcotoxic fishes?
ciguatoxin, tetrodotoxin and scombroid toxin
What is the MOA of ciguatoxin?
disrupt voltage gated Na+ ion channels
What are the symptoms of ciguatoxin poisoning?
CV arrhythmia, paresthesia, toothache, pain urinating, blurred vision-can be lethal
What are some ways ciguatoxin can be transmitted?
Semen and breast milk, food chain
How is ciguatoxin poisoning treated?
mannitol ot gabapentin
What genus produces ciguatoxin?
dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus
Where is the ciguatoxin commonly found?
tropical and sub tropical marine fishes
What organisms contain these toxins?
Spanish mackrel, barracuda, black fin red snapper, coral groupers
What are the toxins in the family of cigautoxins?
brevetoxins, maitotoxin, okadaic acid and dinophysistoxin
What organisms produce Maitotoxin?
Gambierdiscus and Fukuyoa spp.
What is the MOA of maitotoxin?
disrupts calcium channels
What fish will maitotoxin if ingested?
Parrotfish, surgeonfish, maito fish
What is the MOA of Okadaic acid and dinophysistoxin-1?
inhibit protein phosphatases and promote tumors
What is tetrdotoxins MOA?
Na+ channel blocker
What are the symptoms of tetrodotoxin poisoning?
GI, neuro and cardiac symptoms
What species of fish contain this poison?
porcupine and black spotted puffer
What are the symptoms associated with scombroid poison ingestion?
histamine poisoning-GI and hives, itching, airway constriction
What fish produce contain the scombroid poisons?
slapjack and albacore tuna, mahi mahi and bluefish
What is the toxin produced by ooxtoxic fishes?
dinogeulliens
What part of the ootoxic fish is poisonous?
roe
What fish contain the dinogeullins?
cabezon, gars and northern blenny
What are the symptoms of being exposed to hemotoxin?
GI, bloody stools, irregular pulse, frothing at the mouth, respiratory distress
What fish contain hemotoxins?
European eel, moray eel and conger eel
