What will you do on your first day?
The first day with pupils in school would be very exciting. I would arrive before staff and students. I would be visible around the school, talk with staff and students. It’s important to set the tone right from the beginning and gain extensive knowledge of the surroundings and get to know every individual and groups within the school environment. I would welcome the opportunity to see how the school operates and possibly draw some conclusions as to how current practice can be improved if it needs to. I would be hands-on ready to lead, manage, encourage, inspire and participate. I would lead assemblies in my first week to introduce myself to set the tone and share my vision. However, being visible around the school is not just for the first day. I believe that this is crucial, a headteacher cannot be a distant figure in an office but must operate within the school community to be efficient and have credibility. You need to be involved, nurture, celebrate success and communicate. You need to have presence.
