Fire Protection Flashcards
Which areas have Fire Detection but no Fire Extinguishing ?
FCOM > 8-20 > System Description
- Wheel wells
- Crew rest areas (F/A and Cockpit)
How many engine fire extinguisher bottles does the 787 have ?
FCOM > 8-20 System Description/ … / Cargo Compartment Fire Extinguishing
2
Either bottle can be discharged in either engine.
What happens when an Engine Fire switch is pulled ?
7 things !
- Both fire extinguishers are armed,
- FUEL : both valves (engine and spar) are closed,
- Anti-Ice valves are closed,
- ELEC : Engine GEN are tripped off,
- HYD : Hydraulic fluid to the engine driven hydraulic pump is cut off and,
- HYD : Engine driven pump is depressurized,
- REV : Power is cut-off to the Thrust reverser isolators valve.
In case of an APU fire warning, will the APU be automatically shut down ?
YES (And automatically extinguished)
How many APU fire extinguisher bottles are there ?
Only 1
What happens when the APU fire switch is pulled ?
5 things :
- Arms the APU fire extinguisher bottle,
- Closes the APU fuel valve,
- Closes the APU air inlet door,
- Trips the APU generator field and generator breaker,
- Shuts down the APU if automatic shutdown did not occur.
Can the APU fire extinguisher discharge automatically ?
YES, after 15 seconds of APU shutdown (allows time for the fuel valve to close) if fire still detected. Both on ground and in flight !
YES :
- An APU fire signal causes the APU to shutdown immediately.
- In flight, the APU extinguisher bottle is automatically discharged after a 15 sec delay (to allow time for the fuel valve to close).
- On the ground, with both ENG OFF, the APU extinguisher bottle is immediately automatically discharged.
Can the HF radios be used in case of AFT CARGO SMOKE detection ?
QRH / NNC “FIRE CARGO AFT”
They can be inoperative.
(ETHOS Training stated that power was removed from them in case of AFT CARGO SMOKE alert…)
How many fire extinguisher bottles are there for CARGO compartment fire extinguishing ?
5 in total
In flight, with at least 1 engine running, the process is automatic:
- The first 2 discharge totally and immediately into the affected cargo hold.
- After 15 minutes, the other 3 discharge in sequence at a reduced rate, each bottle providing 60 minutes of protection, hence the 180 ETOPS.
- If A/C lands within the initial 15 minutes delay, only 1 bottle discharges at a reduced rate after landing.
For which ETOPS operation is cargo fire suppression provided ?
180 minutes ETOPS
Can the Fire and Overheat system be manually tested ?
Yes, by pressing the FIRE/OVERHEAT TEST button on the overhead panel.
In the cargo holds, how many fire extinguisher bottles immediately discharge when a fire is detected ?
2

What will an APU Fire warning trigger ?
- The APU will automatically shut down and,
- The fire extinguisher will automatically discharge.
What will happen if a fire is detected in the waste container in either lavatory ?
- Each lavatory has one fire extinguisher bottle.
- Extinguisher operation is automatic
- There’s NO flight deck indication
How will you know a detection system is unserviceable ?
Every EICAS Advisory message ( 4 ) that starts with “DET” informs the Cockpit Crew that the related detection sytem is failed.
- DET FIRE ENG L, R
- DET FIRE APU
- DET FIRE CARGO AFT, FWD
- DET FIRE WHEEL WELL
Note : there is no indication on the EICAS for any smoke lavatory detector fault.
