Emergency Equipment Flashcards
Emergency Equipment
What kind of fire extinguishers are located throughout the aircraft ?
HALON fire extinguishers and WATER fire extinguishers.
Emergency Equipment
What precautions must be taken if a HALON fire extinguisher is to be discharged in the flight deck area ?
All flight crew members must wear oxygen masks and use 100% oxygen with emergency selected.
Emergency Equipment
How does a HALON fire extinguisher work ?
When discharged, the Halon vaporizes and extinguishes the fire by chemically interrupting combustion.
Emergency Equipment
On which type of fires should a HALON fire extinguisher be used ?
Although effective on all types of fires, they should be primarily used on
• ELECTRICAL,
• FUEL and
• GREASE fires.
Emergency Equipment
On which type of fires should a WATER fire extinguisher be used ?
Only on
• FABRIC or
• PAPER fires.
Emergency Equipment
Can water from a water fire extinguisher be drunk ?
NO !
Anti-freeze compound was added to the water which makes it unfit for drinking.
Emergency Equipment
What are PBEs (Protective Breathing Equipment) used for ?
They are the smoke hoods !
They provide protection from smoke and fumes while locating and extinguishing fires.
Emergency Equipment
What does the GREEN flashing light indicate on the PBEs (Protective Breathing Equipment) ?
Oxygen flow was properly activated and the hood is inflating.
Full inflation takes 1 to 3 minutes
Emergency Equipment
How long does a PBE (Protective Breathing Equipment) provide breathable atmosphere for ?
15 minutes.
7-8 minutes of oxygen followed by 7-8 minutes of CO2 scrubbing.
Emergency Equipment
What does the RED flashing light indicate on the PBEs (Protective Breathing Equipment) ?
The oxygen supply is depleted and the PBE must be discarded.
Emergency Equipment
What should be checked during preflight on the PBEs (smoke hoods) ?
- Tamper-evidence seal not broken,
* Humidity indicator is BLUE.
Emergency Equipment
Which color are flight crew life-vests ?
ORANGE
Emergency Equipment
When should a life-vest be inflated ?
After exiting the aircraft.
Emergency Equipment
How can the light on the side of the life-vest be turned on ?
It turns on automatically thanks to the water activated battery.
Emergency Equipment
Can a slide/raft be deployed by opening a door from outside of the aircraft ?
NO
They are automatically disarmed when the door is opened from outside of the aircraft.
Emergency Equipment
What can be done if a raft fails to inflate automatically ?
It can be manually inflated by using the red inflation handle at the bottom of the doorframe.
Emergency Equipment
Who can use the EMK (Emergency Medical Kit) ?
• A Medical doctor or
• A doctor of Osteopathy,
to treat an ill person during flight.
Emergency Equipment
How many ELTs (Emergency Locater Transmitters) are there ?
3
• 1 Fuselage-mounted,
• 2 Portable ones.
Emergency Equipment
What is the operational battery life of the ELTs ?
At least 24 hours.
Emergency Equipment
Where are the portable ELTs located ?
Doors
• 1L
• 4R
Emergency Equipment
How can the fuselage-mounted ELT be triggered ?
Through a switch on the overhead panel in the cockpit.
