Fibromyalgia Flashcards
Fibromyalgia
chronic muscle pain syndrome (not a disease), can occur as result of other inflammatory conditions, metabolic dysfunctions, or cancer, most common musculoskeletal disorder.
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CSF)
CFS is an early form of FMS, differ by degree of fatigue, CFS associated with viral infections and constitutional symptoms
Risk factors for fibromyalgia
prolonged anxiety, emotional stress, trauma (e.g., motor vehicle accident, work injury, surgery), rapid steroid withdrawal, hypothyroidism, and viral and non-viral infections, & exposure to tobacco, or no obvious events or illnesses. Increased prevalence among minimally to moderately physically fit, anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder
etiology of fibromyalgia
Diet, viral origin, sleep disorder
Occupational, seasonal, or environmental influences
Psychologic distress
Adverse childhood experiences, including sexual abuse
Familial or hereditary link
Pathogenesis of fibromyalgia
Result of CNS malfunction, increased pain transmission and perception, with ineffective pain inhibition
Clinical manifestations of fibromyalgia
muscle pain often described as aching or burning. Diffuse pain or tender points, sleep disturbances, symptoms are exacerbated by stress, exhaustive physical activity, humidity/heat, cold damp weather, trauma.
treatment of fibromyalgia
Improve processing & handling pain by CNS, relaxation techniques, medications, and hollistic and multidisciplinary, focusing on education and support.
Special implications for the therapist regarding fibromyalgia
A positive approach is to suggest working together to learn how to move forward with FMS, respecting limitations but not being controlled by them. Monitoring vital signs (BP & HR indicate cardiac/circulatory system function)
Incidence of fibromyalgia
Women are affected 90% more often than men, symptoms appearing between the ages of 20 and 55 years old.
