Ankylosing Spondylitis
Inflammatory disease primarily of the axial skeleton, SI joints, apophyseal joints, costovertebral joints & intervertebral disk articulations
Ankylosing Spondylitis incidence
more common in white and native Americans, diagnosed early (age 15-30), differential diagnosis of mechanical back pain (30-65 years of age), men are 2-3x more likely.
Etiology and risk factors of Ankylosing Spondylitis
genetic or environmental link, risk factors are gender, age, race, and family history.
Pathology of Ankylosing Spondylitis
Disruption of junction of tendon, ligament, cartilage, or synovium with bone. Replacement of inflamed cartilage by bone = progressive ossification
Clinical manifestations of Ankylosing Spondylitis
initially, insidious onset of SI joint pain, duration of greater than 3 months. pain begins as dull ache, becomes more severe and constant. Coughing, sneezing, & twisting worsen pain.
Rehab management for Ankylosing Spondylitis
maintain spinal extension, breathing, postural training, endurance, gait training
