Noncancerous breast lumps
Affects 30-60% of women
50% are of childbearing age
Cuases of Fibrocystic disease
not fully understood
could be hormonal
Why is it thought that Fibrocystic disease associated with hormones
because it subsides post-menopause
Clinical presentation of Fibrocystic disease
Lumpy cobblestone texture in breast
smooth with defined edges
highly mobile and have consistency of firm rubber.
+- tenderness
+- swelling
+- itchy breast/nipples
symptoms follow period
Investigation of Fibrocystic disease
Diagnosis is clinical after malignancy is excluded
USS and aspiration maybe but not all the time
Mammography and MRI maybe
Management of Fibrocystic disease
Non usually
If needed try progesterone ointments and supplements
Prognosis of Fibrocystic disease
In almost all cases this subsides after menopause
Breast cancer risk is increased for a small fraction of lesions
