Fetal skull Flashcards
Define the calvaria
The skull cap
Define fontanelle
The soft membranous gap (aka sutures) between the cranial bones that make up the calvaria
State 4 skull sutures
- Frontal suture (frontal bone)
- Coronal suture (parietal bone)
- Sagittal suture (parietal bone)
- Lamboid suture (occipital bone)
State the 6 fontanelles in the calvaria
- Anterior (bregma) fontanelle
- Posterior fontanelle
- Sphenoid fontanelle
- Mastoid fontanelle
Give the boundary of the anterior fontanelle and when it fuses
Bounded by coronal suture and frontal suture and sagittal suture (fuses ~ 18 months)
Give the boundary of the posterior fontanelle and when it fuses
Bordered by sagittal suture and lambdoid suture (fuses~3 months)
Give the boundary of the sphenoidal fontanelle and when it fuses
On the lateral side of skull above sphenoid bone (fuses ~ 6 months)
When does the mastoid fontanelle fuse
Between 6-18 months
State 2 functions of fontanelles in children
- Enables skull to be more flexible during childbirth
2. Allows for rapid stretching as the brain grows rapidly
What is the condition called when fontanelles fuse?
Cleidocranial dysplasia
Define the terms ‘moulding’ and ‘Caput’
Moulding = Bones overlap each other Caput = swelling of fetal head
State the 6 longitudinal diameters of the fetal skull
- Suboccipitobregmatic (9.5cm)
- Suboccipitofrontal (10cm)
- Occipitofrontal (11.5cm)
- Submentobregmatic (9.5cm)
- Mentovertical (13.5cm)
- Submentovertical (11.5cm)
