fetal circulation Flashcards
What are the 5 structures of fetal development you see as remnants in adults?
1) Ductus arteriosus
2) Foramen ovale
3) Ductus venosus
4) Umbilical vein
5) Umbilical arteries
What does the ductus arteriosus become in an adult? Important marker? LOCATION?
Ligamentum ateriosum, recurrent laryngeal nerve is posterior to the left
*connects arch of aorta and pulmonary artery
What does the foramen ovale become in an adult?
fossa ovalis in right atrium
What does the ductus venosus become in an adult? fond?
Ligamentum venosum, found under liver between left lobe and caudate lobe
What does the umbilical vein become in an adult? found?
Ligamentum teres (dangles off the liver)
What does the umbilical arteries become in an adult?
Medial umbilical ligaments
What does the ductus ateriosus do?
Another bypass between the pulmonary trunk and arch of aorta, help bypass the liver
What does the foramen ovale do?
It’s a hole between fetal atria’s bypassing the lungs (right atrium to left atrium). Closes at birth
What does the ductus venosus do?
The shunt that carries oxygenated blood from umbilical vein up to the heart bypassing the fetus’s liver
What does the umbilical vein do?
Carry oxygenated blood to the fetus from mom through placenta
What do the umbilical arteries do?
Carry used blood away from the fetus
Median umbilical fold in abdomen created by degradation of?
urachus
what is the urachus?
This is how the bladder emptied in the fetus, carried urine from bladder to mother through belly button
Medial umbilical fold created by degradation of?
obliterated umbilical arteries
